Works to improve St Sepulchre Gate will be programmed in at a later date.

Highways bosses said the refurbished surfaces will be of particular benefit to mobility users, the physically and visually impaired.

Capital funding must be spent on building and infrastructure projects and cannot be used to pay for day-to-day council services.

The project is hoped to be complete by 2021.

Coun Joe Blackham, cabinet member for highways, street scene and trading services, said: 'These improvements will make a big difference in our town centre. 'The refurbished and restored paved surfaces will enhance the aesthetics and be better and safer for pedestrians. These works are part of our ongoing commitment to improve the town centre and attract more business and visitors.'
