Conisbrough Festival calls for talented artists

Conisbrough Music Festival organisers have put the call out for artistic types to contribute to the event in July.

Organisers are after a design which incorporates the history of the village.

They will run two competitions. One for artists under 16 and another for those who are older.

The winning design from an under 16 artist will go on the children's t-shirt, while the over 16s best creation will be on the adult tees.

The successful artists will get free tickets to the big day at the Welfare Field, Gardens Lane, and a shirt.

Organiser Steve Pugh said anyone with an artistic flair was welcome to submit an entry.

"Anybody who thinks they can turn their hand to it," he said.

Music mainstay Tony Christie, a former Conisbrough boy, will headline this year's festival on July 1.

Tony his most famous for his 1971 cover of Neil Sedaka's (Is This the Way to) Amarillo.

His many collaborations have included Sheffield legends Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley and Alex Turner.

The festival is in its third year, and Mr Pugh said Tony would be the biggest headline by far.

After an early career on the local working men’s club circuit, Tony’s breakthrough came that same year with his first UK top 30 hit, Las Vegas, which made number 21.

It was followed by ‘I Did What I Did for Maria’, which made it to number two (and number one on the New Musical Express chart).

With the help of Peter Kay and Comic Relief, Amarillo soared to the top of the UK chart in 2005. Over the course of his career, one that includes more than 40 albums, 70 singles and countless live performances, Tony has performed thousands of songs.

The closing date for the entries is May 12. It will be judged by the Doncopolitan Magazine staffers.
