Community project ‘sheds’ light on Doncaster creative spirit

Passers-by in Doncaster’s Bentley Park may find creative arts and culture in a place they least expect – a garden shed.

The team behind the Right Up Our Street project have given a wooden shed a bright and colourful makeover and situated it in the park, where it will play host to a range of creative workshops and arts projects throughout the summer.

Dan Jones, the artist commissioned to build the shed, said: “We’re really excited about our pop-up shed in Bentley.

“It’s a great way of taking creativity, culture and the arts right into the heart of the community – quite literally placing it in the heart of one of Doncaster’s busiest parks.

“We’ve had a great time decorating it with a team of local young people, and we can’t wait to welcome more members of the public in to try their hand at everything from stone carving to music and painting, over the coming months.”

The Bentley Pop-Up Shed is part of the Arts Council England-backed Right Up Our Street project’s work across Doncaster.

Lydia Caprani, project co-ordinator for Right Up Our Street in Bentley, said: “The Right Up Our Street Project is all about creating a community spirit by bringing people together to enjoy cultural and creative activities.

“We welcome suggestions from members of the public for what else we can do with The Pop Up Shed in Bentley and in other areas of the town, too.”

The shed will remain in use throughout Bentley until December 2015.
