Church in roof boost

THE new year has started with a fantastic boost for the All Saints’ Church roof appeal in Misterton.

Volunteers have organised community events to help raise funds after the church was targeted eight times in as many years by lead thieves.

This left All Saints’ with a £33,308 repair bill and facing the prospect of closure but the ‘fighting fund’ now stands at £22,000 following a £2,000 cheque from West Burton Power Station and EDF Energy.

Misterton resident John Ward works at the power station and he was able to secure the generous donation from EDF Energy, owners of the site.

Volunteer fundraiser Jane Moffett said: “It was completely unexpected and is a marvellous new year boost to the appeal. We simply could never have hoped for such a large donation straight after Christmas.

“We cannot say how extremely grateful we are to John, West Burton Power Station and EDF Energy for their help and support.”

A new alarm system has been installed at the church and work has been completed on the north side with stonemasons beginning repairs to masonry earlier this week.

Only the south side remains to be repaired and upcoming fundraising events planned include a sale of equipment for the disabled, a ‘promises’ auction and a race night.
