A 21-year-old from Harworth has been crowned Doncaster’s most festive person.
Jenny Pencott beat two other contestants to win the title at a contest judged by primary school pupils at Lakeside Shopping Centre.
The contest, named an elf off after the family Christmas film Elf, was judged by five year five pupils from Balby Central Primary School.
They pitted the three hopefuls against each another in a series of yuletide tasks to reveal who had the most Christmas spirit.
Round one asked the hopefuls to wrap a gift the fastest, round two required the elves to sing Christmas classic Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and round three involved speed shopping at the centre to find a perfect present for a sports-loving dad in just five minutes.
Jenny said: “I was an elf at the Frenchgate Centre grotto last year, however, I became poorly this year and was unable to work at the grotto, which I was so upset about.
“However, when this competition came up I thought I could prove to myself that even though I was poorly I could still do something I loved.
“It made me extremely tired, but I did it and I won.
“I didn’t expect to win, there were two other women competing – they were great and really got into the spirit.
“We all really had fun and that’s the spirit of Christmas – having fun and laughing.
“I do love Christmas, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.
“I just wanted to prove to myself and my family and friends that even if you’re not in the best health you can still achieve something if you put your mind to it.
“My favourite challenge was definitely the sing off. I love Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and being able to sing and be dramatic with it, was certainly something I loved.”
Jenny added: “I studied the dramatic arts at college and have always been into acting. It’s absolutely fantastic.”
Cheryl Sadler, centre manager at Lakeside Village, said: “Congratulations to Jenny, a worthy winner of our elf off.
“Our panel thought she was the most energetic, fun-loving and enthusiastic elf.
“She clearly loves Christmas and told us she has four trees already up at home.”
Jenny received £200 worth of shopping vouchers to spend at Lakeside Village, White Rose Way, Doncaster, and also looked over their festive decorations.
The competition marked the start of a full programme of festive events at the shopping centre which will run from now until the end of December.
Santa’s grotto opens today and will be open until Christmas.
