Lawyers are launching a a fresh appeal against his conviction today, fighting his conviction and six-year sentence for grooming and engaging in sexual activity with a schoolgirl fan.

A judge dismissed his first appeal last July.

The former Sunderland winger, 29, will not be released from his prison cell at Doncaster's Moorland jail for the hearing at the Court of Appeal in London.

After the date was set for the ex-England footballer’s second appeal, his sister Faye Johnson tweeted: “I hope that justice can finally be done for my brother.”

The start of the hearing has sparked a call from the NSPCC for the government to amend the law on grooming children.

A spokesman for the charity said dad-of-one Johnson was convicted of meeting a 15-year-old girl after grooming her, but that the grooming itself was not a crime.
