Age UK Sheffield has launched a Do Something Awesome campaign to encourage people to volunteer, fundraise, or donate in 2016 either personally or with colleagues, friends or family members.

As part of the campaign, the charity is ‘recruiting’ volunteers for its Age UK Sheffield Army, and wants people across the city to join the New Year Brigade and pledge to make a difference for Sheffield’s older community.

Jenny Dewsnap, Age UK Sheffield commercial and marketing manager, said: “As people across the city celebrate the festive season and look ahead to a new year, our Age UK Sheffield Army has one question – could you raise £50 for people aged over 50 in 2016?

“It could be a bake-off event or coffee morning, a sponsored walk or run, or simply make a monthly donation.

“After all, everyone in Sheffield has a relative or friend who is aged 50 or over so this is a cause that is close to all of us.”

The Age UK Sheffield Army was formed in the wake of the John Lewis Christmas advert which this year was in aid of the national Age UK charity. The advert’s focus on loneliness and the Man in the Moon’ theme prompted large numbers of potential volunteers to contact the Sheffield charity and offer their help.

Added Jenny: “Thanks to the advert there was a lot of attention on loneliness during Christmas and we had fantastic support from our local John Lewis store right here in the city centre to help us fundraise and raise the profile of our work and campaigns.

“But it’s important to remember the city’s older community need our support all year round and that’s why we want to rally the troops and start 2016 by getting even more people to join our New Year’s Brigade!”
