Centre saved by campaign

THE Elm Green Lane Community Centre in Conisbrough will be handed over to local people on a long lease.

The decision was confirmed by mayor Peter Davies at a meeting with users, Caroline Flint and local councillors.

More than 1,300 people had signed a peition to save the centre.

John Mills, chairman of the centre management committee, said: “Today is the start of a new era for Elm Green Lane Community Centre.

“It will take about £100,000 to put this centre in tip top shape, but we have already had grant funding approved for half of that amount. We just needed the lease from Doncaster Council and today that was confirmed. We are delighted. Today was great victory for common sense.

A previous council proposal was to merge the centre with the Ivanhoe Centre.
