Central Midlands League round-up: Mixed fortunes for Harworth Colliery

They retained top spot in the North Division but crashed to a 5-0 Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Senior Cup defeat at County Senior League Swinton Athletic.

Retford could have regained top spot had they beaten AFC Bentley, but they had to settle for a share of the spoils from a 2-2 draw.

Zack King and Bradley Maddison were on target for Bentley who would have gone third on goal difference had they won.

Thorne Colliery were the only local winners on a day when neither Askern or Brodsworth Welfare were in action.

They beat Welbeck Lions 3-0 at Elkesley Road in a game which could have been much closer had the home side made better use of the chances they created.

Enjoying a much better campaign than last season, Colliery got off to a flying start with Chris Hancock heading them into a first minute lead.

Hancock showed the home side, who enjoyed enough possession to worry Thorne, how it was done when adding a second in the 39th minute.

Aiden Marshall hammered the final nail into Welbeck’s coffin with a neat chip over the keeper midway through the second half.

Harworth Colliery seconds had to settle for a consolation goal by Tom Pick when going down to a 3-1 home defeat against League One rivals Eastwood Community.

Brodsworth Welfare also lost interest in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Senior Cup in midweek when they went down 3-1 against Nostell MW in a game switched to the West Yorkshire club’s ground.
