Firefighters were called out at around 10pm last night after the incident was reported and found the car well alight, next to the Stainforth link road from junction five of the M18.

The car was described as having left the road and hitting a lamppost, before going down the embankment.

Firefighters from Thorne Fire Station used two hosereels and required breathing apparatus to put the flames out. They spent around half an hour on the site dealing with the fire.

The car, a blue Grand Cherokee, was empty, although that was not known when the fire engines arrived on the scene last night.

Police also attended the incident.

The new link road, called Unity Way, only opened in December and runs between Junction 5 of the M18 and Waggons Way next to the former Hatfield Colliery.
