Campaign to reduce speed at Doncaster accident black spot

Campaigners say Doncaster Road in Bawtry should be reduced from a 40mph to a 30mph zone to bring it in line with all other main routes into the town.

A number of school children use a crossing on the busy road and residents say it’s an accident waiting to happen.

Doug Cartwright, chairman of Bawtry Residents Group, said: “There’s a lot of support for this campaign. Over the last 12 months there have been accidents and numerous near misses.”

Caroline Flint MP said: “More communities are wanting to slow traffic – and Bawtry residents, the Town Council and school all want the speed limits reduced on the road entering Bawtry. I am right behind them.”

Gill Gillies, assistant director of environment at the council, said: “We have reviewed speed limits around Bawtry in recent years and added safety features such as markings, pedestrian islands, street lights and improved signage.

“These have been very successful in maintaining a safe road network and there have been no pedestrian casualties since 2008. We acknowledge community concerns and are reviewing the situation to determine if changes are required.”
