The number of jobseekers chasing each vacancy in areas of Doncaster has quadrupled in less than a year, according to Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton.
Figures show that 10.4 people were competing for every job in Doncaster Central constituency, which includes Armthorpe, Balby and the town centre, last month, compared with just 2.6 per position in June last year.
Miss Winterton said the numbers – which she obtained from Parliament – show the “savage” cuts being implemented by the Government in Westminster “are hurting rather than helping” Doncaster families.
UK unemployment fell 88,000 in the three months to April this year to 2.43 million, the biggest drop since the summer of 2000, according to the Office for National Statistics. The number of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance rose by 19,600 to 1.49 million.
Figures released in April showed there were 3,904 people claiming JSA in Doncaster Central.
