Improvement work is due to start soon at Mexborough Market, with a temporary relocation of the outdoor market while the work is ongoing.
Subject to planning permission for the move being approved , the outdoor market will be moving to a new temporary location on Hope Street from Tuesday April 7, straight after the Easter weekend when the works to York Square begin.
The move will allow Doncaster Council to undertake a £470,000 redevelopment programme of Mexborough Market, installing new market stalls, creating a larger public open space in the square, building in a sloped entrance to replace steps that prevented access for some visitors, moving a CCTV pole and introducing new seating. The plans for the redevelopment were approved in December 2014.
Director of Regeneration and Environment, Peter Dale, said: “The improvement work at the market is an important step in our regeneration of Mexborough town centre. We appreciate the on-going co-operation we have received from traders in making a temporary move to Hope Street, and I’m sure that they will be pleased by the improvements in the market when work is complete.”
It is expected that work on the market will take approximately 20 weeks, during which time the temporary market on Hope Street will be open during normal operating hours.
