Contest to help start a career

Budding entrepreneurs are being offered the chance to start their own market business.

The National Market Traders Federation, (NMTF), has launched a competition for Doncaster people to kick-start their career on the stalls.

The initiative called First Pitch is open to anyone over the age 16 who is not trading on a market and carries a £2,000 cash prize to invest in the business.

NMTF chief executive, Joe Harrison said: ““We hope to encourage Britain’s entrepreneurs to look at market trading as a business that has no limits. Proof of this is in the long list of well known brands, as well as some of the biggest retail names on the high street, who started out on market stalls including Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Matalan, Bonmarche, Dunelm and Morrisons.”

The competition will be judged on a points system, based on product quality, its suitability to the area and market type, the visual display and the attitude of the trader.

A series of stages are involved with traders working on the markets for more than 12 months to find a winner.

The deadline for entries is on April 29 and the overall winner will be announced on July 2, 2012.

Important mentoring from market experts will be provided along the way.

Mr Harrison said: “When you are starting out in business there are many twists and turns to negotiate, so to have advice and guidance from experts when you need it most can be invaluable.”
