Conisbrough residents have just days to make their opposition known to the proposed closure of the village’s only residential home for the elderly.

The potential closure of all eight of the borough’s council owned care homes was announced after the authority was told by the Government to find £109 million cuts. Rowena House, a 36-room residential care home for the elderly and people with dementia is on the list.

Some residents, some of whom have been living at the home for many years are distressed by the news that they may have to move.

Maureen Jones, 54 whose mother lives at Rowena, said: “Not one person I have spoken to wants this to happen.”

Joan Beck, director of adult and community services at Doncaster Council, said the authority had to find efficiencies to reduce its budget by £109m by 2017. She said: “We are proposing a three year plan to help to deliver the major change that will result from these budget cuts.

“This plan will reflect the priorities of the mayor and council, but will be within the much reduced resources available. In order to help us formulate this plan we have asked members of the public to take part in an online discussion and contribute their views on the services that we provide, including the provision of residential homes for older people.

“I need to stress that this is a discussion to help us set priorities and no decisions have been made.”

Members of the public have until November 15 to comment on the budget proposals via the website,

The union Unison has launched a petition against the council’s proposals which could see 1,200 jobs axed. Regional organiser Melanie Onn said: “We are not convinced by the huge figures they say they need to cut. Moving people into private facilities will cause them and their families complete disruption.”

Copies of the petition are available at the Unison office at Hall Cross Road, Doncaster, or visit
