Thieves are believed to have broken into a home in Piccadilly Road, Swinton, in the early hours of December 6 where they took a number of electrical items and the keys to a black Vauxhall Zafira parked on the drive.

South Yorkshire Police said the Zafira later smashed into a lamppost in Kilnhurst Road, between Kilnhurst and Rawmarsh, at about 6.40am and was left badly damaged.

A police spokeswoman said: "Witnesses report seeing a man wearing a red and black jacket carrying several bags in the Dale Road area shortly after the Zafira was abandoned.

"Officers are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the Piccadilly Road area on Tuesday morning, or anyone who may have witnessed the collision in Kilnhurst Road.

"If you saw the Zafira or anyone leaving the Zafira in Rawmarsh on Tuesday morning, police also want to hear from you."
