Mexborough-born star Brian Blessed will feature in tonight’s episode of BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are.

77-year-old Brian shot to fame in the early 1960s in the police drama Z Cars and went on to star in television, theatre and film.

He is a passionate adventurer, having made three attempts on Everest and being the oldest man to reach the North Magnetic Pole, and he wanted to know where his adventuring spirit comes from.

His journey starts in Doncaster but soon leads him back to London and then Portsmouth, revealing an adventuring ancestor, Jabez Blessed, who was his great, great, grandfather and who survived being orphaned and living rough on the streets of London to father 13 children of his own.

Brian said: “I love my name Brian Blessed, it’s the most perfect name, I like it and wouldn’t exchange it for any name, but who are the Blesseds? It’s not good enough just to know your mother and father and your granddad and your - this that and the other ... you need to know the whole root system.

“I had always wanted to be an explorer or an actor, those were my two great loves in life and I was determined to do it.

The show airs at 9pm tonight on BBC1.

Epworth actress Sheridan Smith will appear on the show later in the series.
