Parents and carers whose children attend Outwood Academy received a text message which read: "Dear Parents/Carers. We have been asked by the local police to inform you that they have launched an investigation in Sandall Beat Wood today.

"The investigation is unrelated to the academy and it has been confirmed that this area has been closed off to the public."

An eyewitness at the scene said she saw crime scene investigation officers in white boiler suits entering the wood earlier this afternoon.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Officers are conducting a search of Sandall Beat Woods as part of an ongoing investigation.
