The wheels are in motion to cut the number of councillors sitting on Doncaster Council in half.

There are currently 63 councillors serving 21 wards but Mayor Peter Davies said the Boundary Commission will consider slashing the number to 30 to 35.

Mr Davies has previously said he would like to cut the figure to 21.

Mr Davies told the Free Press it has now being confirmed that the Boundary Commission for England will include Doncaster Council in its 2013 work programme into the number, size and boundaries of wards and number of councillors.

Speaking about the development Mr Davies said: “I still believe 21 councillors would be sufficient but I am realistic and realise that I may have to compromise on the numbers.

“The Boundary Commission is working to find the optimum number of councillors needed which they have said is between 30 to 35 which I believe would monumentally improve the governance of Doncaster.”
