BREAKING: Labour hold Scunthorpe seat

Labour MP Nicholas Dakin has retained his seat in Scunthorpe.

Mr Dakin received 15,393 votes - 41.7 per cent of the vote.

In second place was Conservative candidate Jo Gideon with 12,259 votes - 33.2 per cent of the vote.

UKIP finished in third place - with candidate Stephen Howard winning 6,329 votes.

Mr Dakin said: “Every voter that went to the polls show a vote of confidence in democracy.

“Some of the candidates have said I don’t put the people first. I want to make it crystal clear I have always put the people of Scunthorpe county first and I always will do.”

“I want to thank all the workers that have gone out and helped get this result.”

Independent candidate Des Comerford received 1,097 votes; Green candidate Martin Dwyer, 887; Liberal Democrat Simon Dodd 770 votes and Independent candidate Paul Elsom 206 votes.

The Scunthorpe constituency declaration was made just after 5am this morning.
