Both Bramall Lane and the Keepmoat Stadium have been submitted as potential host venues for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

The Sheffield and Doncaster venues are among a 15 stadium short list which must be whittled down to 12.

Bramall Lane has regularly hosted Sheffield Eagles, most recently last year when their Challenge Cup tie with Hull FC was played there.

The Keepmoat has been the home of Doncaster RLFC since the stadium opened almost ten years ago.

Both venues were submitted as potential host stadiums the last time the World Cup was in England in 2013.

But despite the RFL previously pledging to strengthen the sport’s presence in South Yorkshire, neither venue was selected, to the ire of Sheffield United, the Eagles and the Dons.

The World Cup was awarded to England earlier this week, seeing off competition from the United States and Canada.

Organisers have said at least 80 per cent of the 31 World Cup matches will be held in the sport’s northern heartland.

Other Yorkshire venues submitted are the KCOM Stadium in Hull, Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium and Headingley in Leeds.

Wembley Stadium, London’s former Olympic Stadium, Liverpool FC’s Anfield, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and Newcastle United’s St James’ Park have also been put forward.

The Ricoh Arena in Coventry, Wigan’s DW Stadium, Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium and St Helens’ Langtree Park complete the shortlist.
