Boxing: Gavin spearheads big series of fight nights

Gavin McDonnell will tomorrow kick off a fascinating series of matches involving local fighters.

The Doncaster man competes for the WBC Silver super bantamweight title against Jorge Sanchez on the Frampton v Quigg bill at Manchester. On the same evening there is a six-fight card at Doncaster Dome, with Jason Cunningham disputing the English bantam belt with Ashley Lane.

On Sunday, Sheffield’s Luke Junior travels to Leeds to face Will Cairns. That’s followed on March 4 when city veteran Carl Wild pursues his 15th win as a pro, against Ricky Summers in Dudley.

Derbyshire’s Ryan Fields hopes to win the Midlands Area welter title against Karl Wiggins a day later in Birmingham, a show featuring Sheffield’s Lee Connelly.

March 12 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, sees Dronfield’s English champion Lewis Taylor and Tommy Langford go head to head for the WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title.

A seven fight card is being planned for Saturday March 19 at Barnsley Metrodome, with Ben Wager out after losing a Central Area title shot last year.

Then it’s full steam ahead for the ‘main event,’ Kell Brook defending his IBF world title against Canadian Kevin Bizier, at Sheffield Arena on March 26. Local heavyweights David Allen v Richard Towers provide chief support, with middleweight Adam Etches due an outing too.

Barnsley’s Andy Townend fights Craig Poxton for the English super featherweight title on the show.

Then the following weekend, Rotherham’s Nav Mansouri goes for the British super welterweight title against Liam Williams in London. At the same time in Rotherham, Sheffield’s Muheeb Fazeldin competes with Klaas Mboyane for Commonwealth honours, with Liam Cameron boxing Jahmaine Smyle for the English super middle title and Sam Sheedy on the undercard.
