This much loved bird – a relative of the heron – is normally heard at the start of spring. Trust site manager, Andy Dalton, said: “It has been an exciting few years at Potteric Carr as bitterns have begun to nest. We usually hear male bitterns in spring and early summer, but to hear one at the start of January is exceptional.”
