Bid to get South Yorkshire youngsters hooked on fishing

The Canal & River Trust, the charity which maintains 2000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, is inviting those who have never cast off before to attend a series of free fishing events from July through to September to celebrate National Fishing Month.

The first ‘Go Fish!’ session at Don Gorge in Sprotbrough on July 29 attracted dozens of people of all ages who wanted to give fishing a try.

Attendees were given a free starter kit and received guidance from a professional fishing coach.

The trust has backed the initiative as fishing has experienced a decline in numbers, especially amongst youngsters, in recent years.

The charity said sales of junior rod licences have dropped by 50 per cent in the last six years and blamed the decline on the attraction of playing video games indoors.

Tom Wright, community development and engagement manager in the north east for the Canal & River Trust, said: “Canals are fun places to explore. They provide a place for both nature and people to thrive – including your little ones.

“Our waterways are home to literally millions of fish with around 40 different species. There’s nothing quite like fishing for helping you slow down and get in touch with nature. We hope these free taster sessions will get more people, young and old, hooked on fishing at Don Gorge Fish Pass.”
