Belton birthday marked with a charity ball

A charitable Belton woman is planning to use her 60th birthday celebration to raise money for two worthy causes.

Muriel Broadhurst, known as Mue, of High Street is set to mark the milestone on November 18 and is in the process of organising a charity ball, to be held at the Wortley Hotel in Scunthorpe on November 15.

The event is being used to raise funds for charities close to Mue’s heart, Help 4 Heroes and Macmillan Cancer Support.

She explained: “Macmillan because my brother Fred is recovering from bowel cancer.

“I know there are so many people suffering from cancer that need Macmillan support.

“Help 4 Heroes because my son Paul was in the army for 16 years.

“He actually joined the same regiment as my grandfather John Joseph Lane.

“It was lovely to hear the old and young soldier chatting about their experiences of army life.

“Paul was Y-listed out (medically discharged), he was ill for a long time and happily just married the love his life Paula. I have seen that both men and woman are returning to their families ill or maimed and need to learn to live in the world again.”

She added: “It’s not all doom and gloom though; my family keeps positive and laughs a lot.

“At the Wortley I will be having fun but also collecting money to swell the coffers of the two charities close to my heart.”

Mue is seeking help for her fundraising through donation of raffle prizes. Anyone that can offer help will receive recognition on her Facebook page in the programme and live at the ball.

“My friend’s husband Antony suggested I ask the people at the ball to throw their loose change in a bucket to see him and my husband Dave ‘dance’ to It’s Raining Men by The Weather Girls. The mind boggles!”

The ball is a black tie/ball gown event with a twist – men are to wear pink dicky bows and ladies to wear a tiara or pay £1 forfeit for the charities.

Tickets cost £31 – available on 07793433920 or 01427 875956 – including four course meal, music by MASH, disco, raffle and games.
