The Sheffield International Concert Season moves into its final five concerts for 2011/12 when the BBC Philharmonic makes a long-awaited return to the Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall on Saturday March 17 2012.

2011 was a significant year for the orchestra as it moved to its new home in MediaCityUK at Salford Quays and recruited a new Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena in September.

This evening has a distinct Scandinavian theme, with new Finnish Principal Conductor John Storgårds leading the orchestra. The violinist himself has only stepped up to the post this calendar year and his Sheffield debut is greatly anticipated.

The evening’s performance will begin with the folk-inspired miniatures of Grieg’s Lyric Suite. The piece displays the Norwegian composer’s clean melodies and harmonies, holding together its four distinct parts.

Beethoven’s dramatic Third Piano Concerto is performed by Martin Roscoe. He is one of today’s most admired and versatile pianists and received recent glowing reviews from The Telegraph and The Guardian of his performance on the release of Dohnányi: The Complete Solo Piano Music, Vol. 1. The piece Roscoe will play was written whilst Beethoven was losing his ability to hear, heavily influencing the feelings of heroic conflict and tension throughout, complete with a highly emotive finale.

Finally, the Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony is an epic journey that is distinctive for its militaristic rhythms and the muting of the drum, which signals the music energetically rising from the ashes. This closing piece is sure to be a fitting end to an exciting night’s performance.

The Sheffield International Concert Season returns again in March with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse on Saturday 31 March 2012 followed in April by residents The Hallé then the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in May.
