Askern 10k: How did our local runners do?

Brian Watts, who was the only local winner on the night, flew the flag for Doncaster's athletic clubs in what could be the final Askern 10k due to a proposed housing development on Wednesday evening.

Representing the host club, Watts took the honours in the men’s vet-70 race after finishing 276th overall in a time of 49 minutes 25 seconds.

Norman Britton (Tickhill Running & AC) was third of the four-strong field in time of 54.37.

Clubmate Steph Faulkner (50.40) came close to emulating Brian’s feat when coming second in the women’s vet 60 race as did Doncaster Athletic Club’s Marie-Louise Taylor second in the women’s vet-40 race in a time of 45 minutes 14 seconds.

Doncaster’s Shaz Wood (43.53) finished third in the vet-35 race.

Danum’s Debbie Proctor, fourth in a time of 52.49, just missed out on a top-three finish in the women’s vet-55 race.

The event, which attracted a capacity 500-plus field, was won by Hallamshire’s Andrew Challenger in a time of 32 minutes.

Brendan Moody (Barnsley AC) was second in a time of 32.13 with Hallamshire’s Ben Beattie (33.05) claiming third spot.

John Hobbs, third overall, won the men’s vet-40 race in a time of 33.02.

Peter Badger (Doncaster AC) was the first local man home in 12th place in a time of 33.34 which was good enough to earn him third place in the vet-40 race.

Other Doncaster AC runners to finish in the top 50 were Chris Moran, 31st overall in a time of 36.48, men’s captain Martin James (37.28) and Paul Whitehead (37.55).

Askern’s Declan Wainer, 85th in a time of 40.26 finished in the top 100 along with Danum Harriers trio Chris Watson (40.27), Mark Bower (41.11) and former England B rugby union star Dave Scully, 98th in a time of 41.21.
