Rebecca Liddle, aged ten, who attends Edenthorpe Hall Primary School, beat more than 40 entrants to win a competition to design the Edenthorpe War Memorial.

The memorial will be based on her design, which includes a cross and plinth shape, along with the names of military personnel from the village who lost their lives in the Second World War.

MP Rosie Winterton was due to present the youngster with a prize for her efforts at her school this morning.

Harold Scrivens, aged 79, who is chairman of Edenthorpe War Memorial Group, said: “We were very impressed by all of the designs, but Rebecca’s really stood out.”

A £10,000 fundriaising appeal to build the memorial was launched last year and project leaders are so far more than halfway towards reaching their total.

Members of the Edenthorpe War Memorial Committee have discovered the names of six former servicemen from Edenthorpe who lost their lives in the conflict.

The committee wants to site the statue in Thorne Road and hope to unveil it by August.
