£9.1 million funding will create second phase of Doncaster's Great Yorkshire Way airport link road

The Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones has said the cash will fund the second and final phase of the route which connects the M18 to Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Doncaster Council’s Cabinet will meet on 14 March to discuss the latest developments of the scheme.

Phase 2 will be coordinated by the council and supported by funding from the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund (SCRIF).

It will create a one mile connection from Bawtry Road to Hurst Lane completing the hugely important link between the motorway network and airport.Mayor Jones said: “Just one year after the opening of Great Yorkshire Way we are planning for the second phase to start in the coming months.

"Completing the link will provide a seamless journey from the motorway to Doncaster Sheffield Airport offering even easier access to our international airport. “Great Yorkshire Way has already made a remarkable difference for Doncaster’s economy and the wider region. Doncaster Sheffield Airport continues to go from strength to strength, iPort has let units to numerous household names and new homes are being built. We always said it was more than just a new road and the results are there for all to see. Great Yorkshire Way is driving jobs and growth.” The first phase of Great Yorkshire Way created a three mile link from Junction 3 of the M18 to the A638 Bawtry Road and opened on 29 February 2016.

This transformational project dramatically improved access to Doncaster Sheffield Airport helping them to a record year in 2016.

It has also seen Verdion’s iPort sign up four high profile tenants and new homes are going up on the former Rossington Colliery site, coordinated by Harworth Group.The second phase will cost approximately £9.8m with £9.1m contributed by SCRIF and the balance coming from Doncaster Council’s Capital Programme.
