£4k for cancer detection trust

Volunteers from the National Citizen Service have raised more than £4,000 for Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust.

Throughout the six-week summer holidays, the students raised money for the cancer charity by offering free face painting at Frenchgate Shopping Centre and taking part in a sponsored cycle.

As part of Club Doncaster Foundation, the students have each dedicated 30 hours to their chosen project fundraising for DCDT and have raised a total of £4426.11.

Jan Budtz, programme manager at Club Doncaster Foundation, said: “The young people taking part in NCS this summer have all shown a real appetite in making a difference to their local community and the fantastic work in Frenchgate, and money raised for DCDT, shows how big an impact it’s had.

“Our aim is to provide further volunteering opportunities for the 600 young people who have just completed the NCS programme, enabling them to stay in touch with their local communities.

“The NCS programme culminates with a big celebration event at The Dome on September 19 for all young people and staff involved. This particular project will be highlighted along with other 45 projects carried out in Doncaster over the past couple of months.”

Yvonne Woodcock, trustee at Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust, said: “These young people are a credit to Club Doncaster, NCS and their families. All the students have done such a fantastic job and we’re gratefuly for their enthusiasm for fundraising, which has been infectious.”
