Actress Sheridan Smith is a popular choice to become the new Doctor Who, according to a poll conducted by a national newspaper.

The Sun asked readers to pick who they would most like to replace actor Matt Smith in the TARDIS - and Epworth-based Sheridan finished fifth in the poll, scoring 9% of the vote.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson topped the voting, scoring 29% with funnygirl Miranda Hart in second and Jenna Louise Coleman, who currently plays the Doctor’s assistant in the sci-fi smash finishing third.

There is growing speculation that the next Doctor will be played by a woman - the first time in the series history that the Time Lord has been portrayed by a female.
