Young people from Barnsley East are rewarded

Enterprising young people from Barnsley East who have carried out volunteering work and helped in their community have been recognised for their contributions.

The youngsters, were among many who were Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recipients who underwent training at Wombwell Open Award centre, based in the town, at the I Know I Can Young People’s Centre, and had completed bronze, silver or gold level awards.

The go-getting young people were also recognised for achieving certificates in food safety and first aid through the IKIC Initiative.

A total of 45 attended a presentation evening at Shaw Lane, in Barnsley, where they were congratulated by the mayor on both their IKIC achievements, and Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme successes.

A Barnsley council spokesman said: “They were honoured and received certificates from the Barnsley Mayor and Mayoress, Coun Tim and Mrs Julie Shepherd.

“The young people were among 120 from across Barnsley, aged 14 to 23, who during 2013 and 2014 achieved awards through IKIC and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
