Last minute holiday hop tips, courtesy of LateRooms experts, explain how to make most of eleventh hour escapes.
There’s always a reason for wanting a night away (here accompanied by Euro city break guide and Family Adventure Project recent Harry Potter Edinburgh odyssey) from escaping work pressures to enjoying night out with friends, celebrating special occasion in style to simply making most of seasonal sunshine.
And, as summer quickly comes to close, there’s never been better time to give in to your spontaneous side and head off on unscripted, often unexpected, getaway.
Experts at LateRooms.com here share top tips on how to book smarter and get the most from your break - from knowing cheapest days to book to insider secrets on how to bag an upgrade.
Make the most of your annual leave: Being more than halfway through the year, many of us are already starting to see our holiday allowances dwindle. Going abroad often requires another day or two off work, so it’s worth considering what’s around the corner and head to one of the many hidden gems the UK has to offer. Sundays are normally one of the cheapest days of the week to book both a beach break or a city getaway, so it should come as no surprise that a third of us now choose Sunday as our go-to night for an impromptu night away*. It’s also a great way to extend your weekend without eating into what’s left of your holiday allowance.
Look close to home. We’ve found that on average UK holidaymakers are happy to travel for up to 2 hours and 6 minutes for a single night away, with Scottish travellers being willing to go the furthest at 2 hours, 31 minutes. With so many stunning destinations on our doorstep, you don’t have to go too far to enjoy a great getaway.
Consider a city escape: Cities such as Manchester and London are a bit quieter in the summer due to less people travelling for business so there are often bargains to be had. With great shopping, plenty of cultural activities and an abundance of local attractions to visit, it is worth considering a city break as an alternative to the traditional seaside getaway.
Be flexible: If you are travelling for an event but there’s a possibility the dates could change, pay a little bit extra for a flexible rate so that you can change the date if needed – this will save you losing your money if you need to cancel and re-book for another date.
Don’t miss out on flash sales or exclusive deals: Spontaneous bookers can take advantage of fantastic discounts as and when sales appear. Subscribe to newsletters and app notifications to get access to exclusive discounts and be the first to hear about the best deals.
Attempt a cheeky upgrade: If you’re after an extra-special getaway without splashing the cash, there are a few tips you can take into consideration when trying your hand at getting an upgrade. If you arrive after 6pm more rooms will be available and the hotel will have a better idea of which rooms are going to remain empty. Just don’t leave it too late! Also, don’t book the cheapest room then expect a free upgrade. Even plumping for the second cheapest room is likely to increase your chances. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want – politely of course! As the saying goes ‘don’t ask, don’t get!’,so just go for it.
Don’t travel at peak times: Check if there are any events taking place on the dates you are looking to travel. If there are, this will often increase the cost of a room due to demand so if you’re flexible, book around them.
Don’t worry about pets: In our recent survey, it was found that 33 per cent of respondents felt pets to be the biggest hindrance to having an impromptu night away – even more so than finding someone to watch the kids, which only 16 per cent believed to be the biggest barrier! However, with more than 15 per cent of our hotels being pet-friendly, there’s really no reason to miss out on that much-needed me time. Just make sure you filter by ‘pet friendly’ when you search for your next stay.
