South Yorkshire restaurants in running for curry award prize

Staff at a Sheffield restaurant are hoping they have the recipe for success after they were shortlisted for two prizes in the English Curry Awards.

Viraaj, on Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, was one of the 15,000 curry houses or takeaways nominated for the awards by the public.

Judges are visiting those restaurants which have been shortlisted before the winners are announced on Monday, August 31 at a ceremony in Manchester.

Viraaj has been nominated in the ‘team or service of the year’ category as well as restaurant of the year, both in the Yorkshire regions.

Sufi Miah, manager of the restaurant which opened in 2010, said: “A lot of our customers voted for us, we are really happy to be nominated for two awards. We are going to go to the awards and see what happens.”

Shabir’s, Doncaster, is nominated for new restaurant of the year, Cafe Naaz in Rotherham for restaurant of the year, Cafe Masala in Walkley for takeaway of the year and Noim Ullah, of Cutlers Spice in Sheffield, for best chef in the North.
