The council is asking residents to share their opinions on the future of Kingsway Golf Course, more specifically the creation of a footgolf course.

To introduce a footgolf course it would mean changing the current layout by reducing the golf course from 18 to nine holes and creating a nine-hole footgolf course.

Footgolf is a rapidly growing sport that is attracting many visits to golf courses that are now struggling to attract golfers. The game is a cross between football and golf, where the player attempts to kick the ball around a course in the fewest possible shots.

The number of golfers visiting Kingsway Golf Course has dropped from around 11,600 in 2011/12 to just over 5,000 this year (2014/15).

There are a number of reasons for this decline, including changing lifestyles and oversupply of golf in the local area.

Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for customer services, sport and leisure, said:

“We are committed to providing golf opportunities at Kingsway Golf Club; however we need to consider options for future development that will increase the numbers visiting the course. One option is to introduce a footgolf course to Kingsway, which is why we are asking residents’ for their views. It’s important that we ensure that if changes are made that the changes are what residents want. If you would be interested in playing footgolf or regularly use Kingsway Golf Course then please take part in our survey. It will help us shape the future of Kingsway Golf Course.”
