Keeping the History of the Isle alive

One of the oldest groups in the Isle is on the lookout for a year’s worth of newspapers to complete its comprehensive collection of the Epworth Bells.

The Mechanics’ Institute has been in Epworth since 1837 with the purpose of educating the populace through its large lending library. But there is a huge gap in its Bells collection with the entire year’s worth of 1952 copies missing.

Group secretary Chris Pledger said: “We want to promote the service we offer. It only costs £1 per year to join the library at Manor Court House, Market Place, Epworth, and we have a 1,000 book crime section, 500 books all about the Isle, a huge fiction section, some publications dating back to the 1900s and many more books.

“We would urge anyone with any copies of the Bells from 1952 to come forward with them so we can add them to the collection so everyone can view and use them. We will then have a full collection of the newspaper going back to 1872, added Chris, who can be contacted on 01427 871502.
