The happy couple, who live in Wheatley, said they felt “pretty honoured” to be the first ones to marry in a same sex wedding and tied the knot on August 24, in Doncaster Unitarian and Free Christian Church in Hall Gate.

The ceremony was conducted by Rev Tom McCready assisted by Mrs Brigitte McCready, and said while they had had same-sex blessings in the past, they were now licensed to do the legal bit too so it was their first legal same-sex church wedding.

Music was by Brian Morrell and a solo by Holland Morrell, who sang ‘You’re Still the One’; a song chosen by the couple.

Holland also wrote for the church facebook page: “Congratulations to Emma and Dienna, who got married at our church today! You could really see the love in their eyes as they said "I do".”

Dienna, 26, spoke affectionately about Emma, 44, and said: “We have been together for four years come November and started as just good friends and it went on from there. We have wanted to get married for a while.”

She thanked Rev Tom and Brigette for a “fantastic ceremony” and added: “However, Emma didn’t want it to be straight forward and matter of fact, she wanted a church wedding, so we waited for the appropriate time.” Rev McCready said: “It was a very special day for them, and a momentous occasion for us. We hope other churches will follow suit.”
