You heard it here first - Doncaster Frenchgate’s Hungry Horse pub has finally been named - The Mallard.
The pub due to open in December received its name after the pub chain ran a competition for it to be named by local residents.
The site, which is within the Frenchgate Shopping Centre, is set to create around 40 full and part-time jobs.
In July Hungry Horse asked residents what they would like the new pub to be called and a number of suggestions were received, including the Arndale and the Flying Scotsman.
However, the winning name was chosen as the Mallard, which was suggested by Annette Brooks of Conisbrough who has received a £50 gift voucher, which can be used in the pub when it opens.
Annette put forward the suggestion of the Mallard on behalf of her granddad, Ralph Matthews, who has lived in Doncaster all his life. He highlighted the city’s proud links to the railway history and thought that the iconic steam engine would be a fitting name for the pub.
Matt Brown, business unit director for Hungry Horse, said: “I would like to thank everyone who sent in their suggestions to us. We wanted to ensure our name reflects the local area, which is why we wanted it to be decided by our future customers. We are really pleased with the name we have and are very excited to get the doors of the Mallard open and bring our fun, great value and family friendly pub to the shopping centre.”
Hungry Horse offers great value on its range of soft drinks, wines, lagers and real ales and on its famous food menu. The pub will include leather booth seating areas complete with their own TVs and a contemporary look throughout and something for everyone with a play area for children and Sky Sports and pool for the adults.
