2021 Isuzu D-Max revealed with new body and updated interior

Isuzu has revealed the third-generation of its D-Max pick-up truck. A significantly redesigned version of the second-gen model, the newcomer gains dramatic new styling, more technology and an updated chassis. Prices will start from around £20,000 (excl VAT) when it goes on sale in March.

Buyers will have their choice of either rear- or four-wheel-drive — the latter with a locking rear differential — four trim levels and three body styles; a single cab, an extended cab or a double cab. All models will come with a five-year warranty/125,000-mile warranty and five years of UK and European roadside assistance.

While every exterior panel is new, Isuzu is keen to view the latest version — certainly cosmetically — as an evolution rather than a revolution. It also boasts a slightly longer wheelbase than the outgoing model, while higher-specced models now benefit from new Bi-LED headlights and 18-inch alloys.

The bigger changes are inside the cabin which is dominated by a new soft-touch dashboard and a new nine-inch infotainment system. There’s also a new control panel for the air conditioning system, plus Isuzu has fitted more sound insulation in an effort to further quieten the cabin on long journeys.

This latest version also gets more safety equipment, including lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, an autonomous emergency braking system, and an intelligent speed limiter all as standard, earning it a five-star rating from Euro NCAP.

And though the new model is based on the same chassis as its predecessor, Isuzu engineers have strengthened and lengthened the platform to suit the new body. This third generation also benefits from redesigned front and rear suspension, some extra underbody protection and a new electric power steering system; the latter aimed at improving manoeuvrability. It’s also around 80kg lighter than the old model.

Power comes from the same turbocharged 1.9-litre four-cylinder diesel engine as the outgoing model, delivering 162bhp and 267lb ft of torque. It’s also fitted with the same six-speed manual gearbox as the second-gen. However the optional six-speed auto ‘box is a completely new design and offers up to 25 per cent faster gear changes.

Towing capacity remains the same at 3.5-tonnes and though, at 1530mm, the bay is exactly the same width as the outgoing D-Max, it’s slightly deeper and longer.
