A new study has revealed that 19.1 per cent or almost a fifth of the Doncaster population are smokers- making the town the third worst offending area in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire and Humber was found to have the highest number of smokers per population in England overall at 15.7 per cent- well above the national average.

The figures, released by Public Health England on July 7, use data from NHS ‘quit smoking’ services and were collated by Vape Club in a campaign to encourage smoking cessation.

The data reveals a detailed look at where smoking remains an issue, and how successful NHS services have been able to encourage smoking cessation- also known as the ‘quit rate’.

Worryingly, NHS services across all of Yorkshire & Humber recorded 1.65 per cent ‘quit rate’ - below the average achieved across England at 1.89 per cent.

In England, the latest PHE data shows that there were over half a million people admitted to hospital with smoking-related illnesses over 2020 with the NHS already under extreme pressure during the pandemic.

The Yorkshire and Humber region recorded more than 60,000 of these smoking-related hospital admissions.
