Will gyms have to close in Doncaster as South Yorkshire enters Tier 3 lockdown?

Sheffield City Region mayor Dan Jarvis has confirmed gyms in South Yorkshire WILL be allowed to remain open while Tier 3 restrictions are in place.

Strict new controls on daily life to help control the spread of coronavirus will come into force in the region from midnight on Friday (23 October) and cover all four local authority areas – Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

As part of this, all pubs and bars must close, unless they are serving substantial meals, as well as betting shops, adult gaming centres, casinos and soft play centres.

And while gyms will be allowed to stay open – unlike in the Liverpool City Region, which is also subject to Tier 3 restrictions – gym classes will be banned. According to the Gov.uk website, exercise classes and organised sport can still take place outdoors in groups of no more than six. Social distancing must still be adhered to.

Mr Jarvis said social distancing guidelines should continue be followed between people from different households while at the gym. Different households are also still forbidden by law from mixing in any indoor setting.
