The hospitals trust for Doncaster and Worksop has revealed when it expects coronavirus to peak locally, as the death toll rose by another five to 14.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, which runs Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop and Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, said it expects the crisis to peak ‘during and just after Easter’ – and it has set out how it is preparing for the what is to come.

The trust has already introduced visiting restrictions, moved services and wards around and switched the majority of its urgent outpatient appointments to telephone consultations in an attempt to free up capacity and protect patients and staff.

In an open letter, its chief executive, Richard Parker, describes how it has also taken steps to ensure it has all the equipment it will need and implores people to do their bit by staying at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

When preparations began, he said, the trust had 28 intensive care beds across its hospitals, but when additional ventilators and equipment are delivered that will have risen to nearly 130.

“As a team, every single member of staff has worked with one single purpose in mind, and we move into the relative unknown of the next few weeks knowing that we have prepared as well as we can to ensure that we are in the best shape possible to face the challenges ahead of us,” he wrote in the letter published yesterday, Sunday, April 5, before the latest deaths were confirmed.

“All of this effort however, will be for nothing unless we receive the support of local people….

“While Coronavirus looms large, in Doncaster, Worksop and Retford we have been relatively fortunate so far but that does not mean that we have been unaffected. To date, we have sadly lost nine people to Coronavirus. These individuals were mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and friends – the loss of each is a tragedy, and we share our deepest sympathies with their families….

“So please, stay at home, protect the NHS and help us beat Covid-19. What you do now and the actions you take have the potential to save lives.”
