Two new Doncaster coronavirus deaths amid fears of new lockdown

Two new coronavirus deaths have been reported in Doncaster, amid fears of the town being put into localised lockdown after reports of a surge in cases.

Newly released NHS England figures show the town’s death toll now stands at 223 – up two on yesterday.

Doncaster was the only place in South Yorkshire to record new deaths in the last 24 hours with totals in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham remaining static.

Across the UK, a further 37 people, who tested positive for the COVID-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,709.

Patients were aged between 48 and 94 years old.

Earlier today, fears rose that Doncaster could be put back on lockdown – after the town topped a list of places where coronavirus infections are rising.

According to national reports, there is a real risk pubs, shops and schools in Doncaster could be shut down again – after league tables show the town has seen a large number of COVID-19 cases in recent weeks.

It comes as Leicester was put into a localised lockdown after cases spiked there.

The Telegraph reports that coronavirus cases have risen in 10 towns and counties in the past two weeks, with health officials watching these areas, ready to contain any new spikes threatening the UK's fight against the killer bug.

It reports that Doncaster, second in the table to Leicester, saw 43 new infections - half the cases Leicester reported - within the same two week period.
