South Yorkshire Covid death toll rises as seven more die in Doncaster

Hospitals in South Yorkshire have recorded a further 18 deaths of patients who had tested positive for Covid-19, according to the latest daily statistics.

Figures released by NHS England show 54 deaths were recorded in England in the 24 hours to 4pm on Sunday, January 10, including seven patients being treated in Doncaster hospitals bringing the total coronavirus-related fatalities in the town to 622.

In Sheffield, there were also three additional deaths bringing the death tally to 648, and in Rotherham there have now been 462 deaths after six more were recorded.

There were two further deaths recorded in Barnsley, where the death toll now stands at 463.

The data represents the deaths of hospital patients who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous 28 days and whose deaths were recorded in the latest reporting period.

Since April 28 2020, NHS England and NHS Improvement also started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no Covid-19 positive test result but it is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death in the death certification process.

The figures for the latest reporting period show there were four such deaths in England.

According to Government data, a total of two patients across all settings in Doncaster have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 up to January 10.

Separate Office for National Statistics data shows there have been a total of 634 deaths recorded in Doncaster where the death certificate mentioned Covid-19 as one of the causes.

NHS England reported that a total of 2,333,764 people received a Covid vaccine in England between January 8 and January 10.

According to Government data on healthcare, 12 patients with Covid-19 were admitted to Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust sites on January 3 - the most recent date for which figures are available.

It brings the total number of coronavirus patients admitted to the trust's hospitals since the pandemic began to 2,368.

As of Tuesday, January 5, 108 of those patients remained in hospital for treatment including two in mechanical ventilation beds.

Figures for the number of patients discharged are not currently provided on a daily basis.

Is the number of Covid cases rising in Doncaster?

According to the latest Government figures, 177 people in Doncaster tested positive for Covid-19 on January 10.

It brings the total number of people who have tested positive in the town to 16,480.

The highest daily number of cases reported was 334 on October 26, 2020.

How many Covid tests have been carried out in Doncaster?

According to the latest Government figures, 13.6 per cent of the 8,131 people in Doncaster who received a PCR test went on to receive a positive result in the seven days up to January 5.

The figures also show that 153 lateral flow test results were provided on January 9 in Doncaster, bringing the total to date to 4,550.

Those figures represent the number of confirmed positive, negative or void lateral flow device test results.

This is a count of test results and may include multiple tests for an individual person.
