Sixteen more coronavirus deaths reported across South Yorkshire in latest figures

Figures released by NHS England show the deaths were recorded in the 24 hours to 4pm on Sunday, including nine in Sheffield.

The deaths took place between 18 May, 2020 to 31 January 2021 with the majority being on or after 27 January, with the time taken for positive results to be received among the potential factors in a delay between a death happening and being recorded.

NHS England said the patients were aged between 22 and 103 years old. All, except 20 (aged 50 to 96) had known underlying health conditions.

The data represents the deaths of hospital patients who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous 28 days and whose deaths were recorded in the latest reporting period.

In Sheffield, nine further deaths were recorded, bringing the city's total to 785. Rotherham saw five further deaths, to bring the total to 516.

In Barnsley, two further deaths increased the total to 519, while in Doncaster, the figure remains static at 664 with no further fatalities reported.

Since April 28 2020, NHS England and NHS Improvement also started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no Covid-19 positive test result but it is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death in the death certification process.

Nationally, a further 356 people, who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 72,145.
