Bosses at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, which runs the area’s three hospitals, described the situation as ‘positive news’ in its weekly update on the coronavirus situation in Doncaster.

The town’s death toll of Covid-19 cases now stands at 447.

In a statement, released on Facebook, a spokesman said: “We have some more positive news this week as the number of COVID-19 patients we are providing care for continues to remain broadly stable rather than continuing to rise.

"We are currently providing care for 149 patients, 13 of which require intensive care. We have also seen a slight drop in daily COVID-19 related admissions, and long may this continue.

"We are hopeful that we are starting to see the impact of falling community infection rates but we cannot be complacent and would urge everyone to continue to be vigilant and follow the new Tier 3 restrictions.

"Also remember that the simple actions of washing your hands frequently, keeping a 2m distance from others, limiting the number of contacts you have and wearing a face covering does make a difference and has had an impact over these last few weeks.

"You've done an amazing job so far in Doncaster and Bassetlaw, and while it's been challenging, we're truly appreciative of your efforts. Please keep it up for a little while longer.”

The Trust operates Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Mexborough Montagu Hospital and Bassetlaw Hospital at Worksop.
