Police advise mourners after multiple calls about crowd at Doncaster memorial event

Police were called to a Doncaster memorial event after a number of calls and complaints from members of the public about a mass gathering in a park.

South Yorkshire Police said officers attended Jubilee Park in Hatfield yesterday afternoon after receiving ‘multiple’ reports of a group gathering.

One eye witness said some members of the group had been spotted drinking and smoking in the park.

It is understood that people had gathered in the park to pay tribute to a friend who had recently died.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police received multiple reports from around 3pm onwards yesterday of a group gathering in Jubilee Park, Hatfield.

“When officers attended, those present were engaging in social distancing but were given advice.”

Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson eased lockdown restrictions, allowing one person from a household to meet another – as long as it was in a public place with social distancing rules maintained.
