While Covid-19 rates have fallen across the county in recent days, the numbers still show that Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley have some of the highest numbers in England.

Barnsley is bucking the local trend, with numbers rising.

In the seven days to November 5, the town recorded a rate of 496.6 cases per 100,000 people, a total of 1,226 infections.

That was up from the rate of new cases in the seven days to October 29, with 1,219 infections and a rate of 493.8, meaning Barnsley was ranked 12th worst in England.

Not far behind was Doncaster in 16th place with a rate of 479.0 per 100,000 – a total of 1,494 infections.

However, that number was down from the October 29 figures when there were 1,705 cases and a rate of 546.7.

Rotherham was ranked 22nd nationally, with an infection rate of 456.7 (1,212 infections), down from the previous week with a 522.2 rate and 1,386 cases.

The best place in South Yorkshire was Sheffield, where infection rates have dropped from 410.2 to 381.8, a reduction in cases from 2,399 to 2,233, earning it 45th spot in the nationwide rankings.

The figures, for the seven days to November 5, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (November 6-9) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on November 9 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
