The trust which runs the Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Mexborough Montagu Hospital, and Bassetlaw Hopsital says this week has been the first in three months that they have seen two days with no new cases.

A spokesman said: “This week we marked two non-consecutive days without confirming any cases of Covid-19 – this is the first time since March.”

It is the latest piece of good news for medics at the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Trust, after the announcement that there is now a drug that can be used to treat Covid 19.

Medics on the critical care wards had previously described how all they were able to do was relieve symptoms such as blood clots because of the lack of a known treatment.

The trust’s hospitals have been part of the clinical research trial, amongst other NHS providers, which has outlined the use of dexamethasone as a potential treatment for the illness.

The spokesman added: “As it stands at 11.15am today, we’re currently caring for 50 patients, down from an average of around 100 just a month or so ago.

“We’re currently caring for three patients in intensive care, again, down from an average of about 15.”

In total the number of Covid patients cared for by the trust is now 678. The number of patients who have been discharged is 418.
