Doncaster’s coronavirus death toll remains static for second day

The town’s death toll remains at 224, new NHS England figures released this afternoon, say.

Earlier this week, national figures suggested Doncaster may be subject to a localised lockdown after a reported spike in cases.

But Dr Rupert Suckling, Doncaster’s Director of Public Health allayed concerns over the number of cases but urged people to be vigilant and to follow social distancing and hygiene rules.

He said the spike was down to a number of care home cases in the town and that infection levels were nowhere near levels needed for a localised lockdown.

But ahead of this weekend’s re-opening of pubs, drinkers have been urged to act responsibly to ensure there is no second wave of coronavirus.

The Prime Minister said that he wanted people to use the loosening of lockdown in England from tomorrow to 'enjoy summer'.

But he insists that the success of the move is down to whether people act 'responsibly', urging the public not to 'let down' the sectors of the economy that desperately need to reopen safely.

A further 38 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,832 making the UK total 43,995.
